In Finland, Yellow Endometriosis Week is observed in March, and this particular week holds deep personal significance for me. The disease affects many aspects of my life, but it has been comforting to know that I’m not alone with this.
When struggling with illness, knitting has always brought me great comfort and eased my mind when everything else has felt overwhelming. This is closely tied to the story behind the Kukinto mittens, named by my daughter. I wanted to create mittens that provide solace and add warmth to everyday life, so I designed this knitting pattern to celebrate each and every one of us - regardless of our life circumstances.
Above all, these mittens are dedicated to those of us fighting illness, dreaming of motherhood, those who have lost a child, mothers, grandmothers, foster mothers, bonus moms, those who never became mothers, those who have lost their mothers, and those who never got the chance to know their mother.
The pattern is written for circular needles using the Magic Loop technique, but can easily be adapted for double-pointed needles.
For this pattern you will need:
1 skein (approx. 70g) of Lankastudio Suovilla Riite yarn (100 g / 270 m) in your chosen color (shown in the photo: shade Aurinko)
2.50 mm circular needles (recommended cable length at least 80 cm)
2 stitch markers, a stitch holder or scrap yarn, a darning needle and scissors
Gauge: 24 stitches and 38 rows = 10 x 10 cm
The mittens in this pattern are women's size S. However, you can easily make a larger size by using larger needles.
